People often ask: why is it important to change my plugs on a scheduled cycle?
The answer to that is, regularly maintained plugs not only help your gas mileage but also help increase vehicle performance. There are many signs of faulty plugs. Extended periods of low speed driving can cause carbon build up on your plugs which can cause loss of power and higher gas usage.
Normal appearance should be light brown, Tan or Grey. A dry sooty or wet appearance indicates misfiring. Some build up on the tip of the plug during its life is normal but if this is accompanied with a large plug gap it means they are due to be replaced. Many things can contribute to short life of spark plugs such as bad oxygen sensor, coolant sensor or just bad gas.
